Dan Cabrera receives Diversity Faculty Mentoring Award

Dr. Daniel Cabrera, clinical assistant professor (General Internal Medicine) is the inaugural recipient of the Diversity Faculty Mentorship Award from the Resident Diversity Committee (RDC).

The Resident Diversity Committee (RDC) recognizes that it takes a village to truly build a culture of inclusion in our community; work that goes beyond what we are doing as residents.

This award honors a faculty member who demonstrates exceptionalism in mentoring underrepresented physician trainees and who champions an environment of diversity and inclusivity.

Dr. Cabrera is the Assistant Residency Program Director and Assistant Student Clerkship Director for Diversity and Inclusion. He works hard in all levels of the pipeline to bolster mentees and colleagues around issues of diversity and inclusion.

His passion and heart for this work is perhaps best reflected by some of what our residents had to say about him: 

“Dan was instrumental in me choosing UW for residency. As a person of color, he made me feel that UW was a place I could belong and be successful. He is an outstanding mentor, incredibly thoughtful physician, and advocate for diversity and inclusion. UW is very fortunate to have him.”

“When thinking of who deserves this award, it is hands down Dan Cabrera. While Dan is now working as an APD and his title reflects more of the work he does, he has been doing the work of supporting residents and medical students without that title for years.

Throughout the last few years, I have watched Dan put in his own time, resources, and relational effort in support of the RDC and in support of the wider goal of bringing justice and equity to our training system around areas of diversity and inclusion.

Personally, Dan's presence and support helped me to hang on to myself and values throughout residency and during times where I felt discouraged. He encouraged me to branch out and find both a job and work that reflects my own values around diversity and inclusion- something I am very thankful for.

Dan Cabrera deserves this award and much more for being a person and physician that demonstrates what it looks like to be invested in coming alongside and supporting residents and students from underrepresented backgrounds in a system where this is desperately needed."
