Andrew White receives Gene Peterson Excellence in Quality Improvement Award

This award is given annually to a faculty member who demonstrates commitment to resident learning in the areas of quality improvement and patient safety.

Congratulations to Dr. Andrew White, professor (General Internal Medicine), who is the 2026 recipient of the Gene Peterson Award for Excellence in Quality Improvement on behalf of the UW Housestaff Quality and Safety Committee.

Named after Dr. Gene Peterson, who greatly valued the involvement of trainees in the fields of quality improvement and patient safety at the University of Washington, this award is given annually to a faculty member who demonstrates commitment to resident learning in the areas of quality improvement and patient safety. 

A board certified clinical informaticist, White is the assistant chief clinical information officer for UW Medicine, where he is responsible for clinical decision support, documentation, and artificial intelligence tool monitoring. He was awarded the 2026 Clinical Informatics Excellence in Teaching Award, which honors exceptional teaching and mentorship in the field of informatics.

He holds several leadership and teaching roles within quality improvement and patient safety. He co-leads the Graduate Medical Education Quality & Safety Foundations Course, which provides quality improvement and patient safety education to residents and fellows across University of Washington.

He additionally led the Certificate Program in Patient Safety and Quality, an educational program co-sponsored by Seattle Children’s Hospital and the Center for Scholarship in Patient Care Quality and Safety at UW Medicine. This year, he will also be teaching in the new Department of Medicine Quality Improvement Education Series.

In addition to teaching and leadership roles, he has had significant scholarly contributions, with numerous publications and grant-funded research and quality improvement work. Many of these projects explore themes of quality, safety, communication, collaboration, and education.

White is an outstanding advocate, leader, teacher, mentor, and clinician. He exemplifies the very best of our profession, combining unparalleled expertise with steadfast dedication to high quality patient care and education.
