Congratulations to Dr. Namrata Singh, associate professor (Rheumatology) who is a recipient of the 2025 School of Medicine Excellence in Mentoring Women Faculty Award.

This award recognizes the importance of mentoring women faculty by faculty at all levels.

Singh is widely sought out by fellows, residents, and medical students—particularly women—many of whom she mentors over years and successfully recruits and retains at the University of Washington as faculty. Beyond individual mentoring, she is a tireless advocate for women, people of color, and international medical graduates through her leadership on equity committees, national advocacy efforts, and scholarly work.

She also uniquely fosters joy, community, and belonging through initiatives like revitalizing UW Women in Rheumatology and creating spaces for connection outside of work.

Some comments from her nominators include:

"The most noticeable thing about Dr. Singh is that she mentors almost every fellow. They flock to her and she never says no. This is in addition to the mentoring she does for medical students and residents. Not only are they drawn to her, she works with them for years, following them and helping grow their careers."

"Dr. Singh advocates for women and people of color at the systemic level as well as the individual level. She went to Washington DC with to advocate for better access to care for our Medicare patients. She serves on the Gender Equity Council as well as our rheumatology DEI committee and was named APD for her role in research. She has published on how to encourage and incorporate international medical graduates and has been a vocal advocate for our IMG residents and attendings."

"I credit Dr. Singh’s enthusiasm for clinical research studies in rheumatology as fueling my own motivation to continue to pursue the physician scientist route. As you may well know, you can’t be what you can’t see."

"I would call Dr. Namrata Singh a true mentor’s mentor, as well as an productive and efficient clinician scientist working to improve outcomes for individuals living with RA. She brings light and joy to clinical research, even in times when we might be stressed for time or resources."

"Dr. Singh exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding mentor through her dedication to fostering the careers of women and underrepresented minorities in academic medicine, her impressive research productivity, and her commitment to creating an inclusive environment that promotes excellence in clinical research."

"She demonstrates exceptional skills in identifying and fostering research opportunities that advance her mentees' careers while addressing critical healthcare disparities."

"Dr. Singh works to create systemic changes that support women faculty advancement. Her dedication to mentoring while maintaining an active clinical practice and robust research program demonstrates for junior faculty that excellence in academic medicine is achievable with proper support and guidance. She brings a different perspective to everything she does, often helping mentees see challenges as opportunities and encouraging innovative approaches to research problems."

"Dr. Singh has that rare intangible quality and enthusiasm that characterizes an outstanding mentor. She is an energetic self-starter, a visionary, and an excellent motivator of young physicians and scientists. Not only is she an astute clinical investigator, but she is also an excellent clinician, an outstanding teacher, and an exceptional motivator of our fellows. She is also a mentor for medical students, as well as teaching the students and residents rotating in the clinics. Not surprising that she received the Outstanding Mentor Award in 2022 from the UW School of Medicine for her dedication."
