

Joyce Wipf Rising Star Awards

Congratulations to the 2025 recipients of the Joyce Wipf Rising Star Awards, Drs. Sarah Leyde, assistant professor, and Elizabeth Schackmann, assistant professor (General Internal Medicine).
Leyde completed medical school at the University of Washington and residency and fellowship at the University of California San Francisco. She cares for patients at the Hobson Clinic, Harborview Adult Medicine Clinic, and on the Harborview Addiction Consult Service. She is associate program director for the UW Addiction Medicine Fellowship.
Schackmann completed medical school at the University of Utah and internship and residency at the University of Washington. She was chief medical resident for the University of Washington Boise Internal Medicine Residency. She is medical director of the Hospital Medicine Service at the Boise VA Medical Center and associate program director for the University of Washington Boise Internal Medicine Residency.
The Rising Star Awards were established in recognition of Dr. Joyce Wipf's legacy as a clinician educator scholar with trail-blazing innovations in medical education and training programs.
As a changemaker, she led the creation of resident as teacher curricula, studies of burnout in medical residents, and interprofessional learning established in the VA Center of Excellence in Primary Care Education.
Dr. Wipf has made an indelible impact on trainees and faculty, both in clinic and on wards with a culture of simultaneous teaching and learning, patient care excellence, kindness and supportive mentorship.
