We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Benjamin Young as the inaugural director of interventional pulmonary for the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, effective Nov. 1.

Young is currently medical director of bronchoscopy and associate clinical chief at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University.

A nationally recognized leader in interventional pulmonology, Young brings expertise in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy, robotic bronchoscopy, pleural disease, and multidisciplinary thoracic care.

His recruitment marks a significant investment in expanding access to innovative, minimally invasive pulmonary procedures and enhancing care for patients with complex thoracic and pulmonary diseases.

As director, he will lead the development of a comprehensive Interventional Pulmonary Program across UW Medicine. The program will provide advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with lung nodules, lung cancer, pleural disease, airway disorders, and lung transplant-related conditions.

A central focus of the program will be collaboration. Working closely with colleagues in Thoracic Surgery, Thoracic Oncology, Lung Transplantation, Radiology, Pathology, Anesthesiology, and Critical Care Medicine, Young will help establish a multidisciplinary model of care that streamlines diagnosis, enhances coordination, and improves access to advanced therapies for patients throughout the region.

“Dr. Young is an exceptional physician, educator, and leader whose vision aligns perfectly with our commitment to innovation, collaboration, and excellence in patient care,” said Reena Mehra, MD, MS, head of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. “His leadership will strengthen partnerships across specialties and help build a world-class Interventional Pulmonary Program that advances care, education, and clinical innovation.”

Under Young’s leadership, the program will expand procedural offerings including robotic bronchoscopy, rigid bronchoscopy, and advanced pleural interventions, while supporting education, research, and system-wide growth across UW Medicine and Fred Hutch Cancer Center.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Young to UW Medicine and look forward to the impact he will have on our patients, trainees, and multidisciplinary clinical programs.
