Faculty spotlight: Erika Goldstein

Dr. Erika Goldstein attended Middlebury College and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and completed her residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine at the University of Washington.

She joined UW General Internal Medicine in 1984 and started the Southeast Asian Refugee Clinic (which subsequently became the International Medicine Clinic) at Harborview Medical Center. Dr. Goldstein was the clinic director until 1986 when she entered the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program, completing an MPH in 1988. She also earned an MA in Anthropology in 1988. She cared for thousands of patients over her years at Harborview, working primarily in the Adult Medicine Clinic and on the medicine inpatient service.

Dr. Goldstein is a dedicated educator. In 1989 she became the course chair for the first-year Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM 1) course and, in 1994, became the course director for the second-year ICM 2 course, leading both courses until 2009.

In 2001 she became the founding director of the UW School of Medicine College Program and, subsequently, the Associate Dean for the Colleges in 2011.

She served as the acting Vice Dean for Academic Affairs in 2010–2011. She won numerous teaching awards including the UW SOM Distinguished Clinical Teacher Award (four times, making her a UW SOM Teacher Superior in Perpetuity), the UW Distinguished Teaching Award (a University-wide award), and the AOA Robert Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges.
