Estimating Microvascular Burden, Endotypes, and Risk

Dr. Gregory Roth, professor (Cardiology) has received a $4.5 million award from Wellcome Leap as principal investigator for the EMBER study (Estimating Microvascular Burden, Endotypes, and Risk).

The award is part of Wellcome Leap's VISIBLE: Women's Heart Disease Revealed program, a three-year, $55 million effort funded with Pivotal and the British Heart Foundation to improve diagnosis and treatment of coronary microvascular disease and ANOCA (angina with non-obstructive coronary arteries) in women.

Because current disease burden statistics capture only obstructive coronary disease, there are no population-level estimates of how common ANOCA is, what burden it carries, or what drives it. EMBER will apply methods from health metrics and the IHME framework for global health estimation to generate the first such estimates, anchored to coronary function testing data from well-characterized clinical registries.

Dr. John Blair, clinical associate professor (Cardiology) is collaborating, with additional collaborators in Toronto and Chicago and co-investigators at the UW Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. The broader aim of VISIBLE is to move ANOCA from a largely undiagnosed condition to one that is routinely identified and treated.
