We are pleased to announce that Rajnish Mehrotra, MD, MS, has accepted our offer for the position of Head of the Division of Nephrology, effective November 1, 2021. Dr. Mehrotra has been the interim division head since December 2019 and follows in the footsteps of Dr. Stuart Shankland, who led the division for 16 years.

He also has a master’s degree in clinical research from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).

Mehrotra joined the University of Washington in 2012, after 14 years at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where he was associate chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, and director of the Peritoneal Dialysis Program.

Here, he has served as the section head of nephrology at Harborview since 2012, and is chair of the Board of Trustees of the Northwest Kidney Centers.

His clinical and research interests include comparative effectiveness of dialysis therapies, patient and technique survival with peritoneal dialysis, decision support for selection of dialysis therapies, mineral metabolism in chronic kidney disease and racial and ethnic disparities in chronic kidney disease. He is nationally and internationally known for his work also recognized by being appointed editor-in-chief of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology since 2017, which has flourished under his leadership.

In addition, he has received many awards and accolades, most recently the American Nephrologists of Indian Origin (ANIO) award for academic excellence and the National Journalism Award from the American Association of Kidney Patients.

“I am very pleased that Raj will be leading Nephrology,” said Department Chair Barbara Jung. “UW Nephrology is the preeminent division in the country and I am excited for Raj to unite and support the division to continue to lead the way in patient care, education, scholarly work and innovation. ”
