Congratulations to Dr. Andrew Luks, professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine), who is this year’s recipient of the Marvin Turck Outstanding Teaching Award.

This is a career achievement award to honor individuals whose long-term contributions have defined departmental standards for patient care and teaching and made the University of Washington an outstanding educational institution.

The award is named for Dr. Marvin Turck, whose energy, enthusiastic teaching, remarkable clinical knowledge, humor, and support for students, housestaff, fellows, and faculty have inspired trainees and faculty for decades. 

 
 
 

Luks earned his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego, and completed his internship and residency at the University of Washington, where he received the Resident Excellence in Teaching Award each year of his residency. He also served as Chief Medical Resident at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. He went on to complete a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, participating in the University of Washington Teaching Scholars Program during his final fellowship year.

He has been honored with numerous teaching awards, including the UW Distinguished Teacher Award on four occasions, earning designation as a Teacher Superior in Perpetuity. Additional recognitions include the Beeson Award for Outstanding Clinical Teaching, the David R. Saunders Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Margaret S. Anderson Award, which honors a faculty member for exceptional concern for and support of medical students.
