Transforming systems of care to address HIV, substance use disorders in prison

Dr. Helen Jack, associate professor (General Internal Medicine) is PI on an administrative supplement grant by the National Institute on Drug Abuse for her DP2 titled “Transforming systems of care to address HIV, HIV risk, and substance use disorders in prisons.”

The four-year NIDA Avenir grant was first funded in 2025. The administrative supplement, which involves collaborators from Duke University and the Washington Department of Health, will do a mixed methods evaluation of a new program within the Washington prison system to expand access to medications for opioid use disorder for people serving long prison sentences.

The supplement will examine policy implementation and the effects of the policy on in-prison behavior and care access.
