Dr. Rachel Issaka, associate professor (Gastroenterology) is the 2026 recipient of two prestigious awards from the American Gastroenterological Society (AGA).

She is recognized for her work addressing inequities in gastrointestinal health and advancing equitable access to colorectal cancer screening, particularly for medically underserved populations. 

AGA Distinguished Service Award in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. This prestigious award honors an individual who has promoted diversity, equity and inclusion within AGA and the broader gastroenterology community.

AGA-Pfizer Beacon of Hope Award for Gender and Health Equity. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding women in the field of gastroenterology who have made significant contributions to advancing gender and health equity for patients and health care providers.

 
 
 

Issaka has dedicated her career to combating health inequity and closing the gaps in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening and outcomes, particularly in medically underserved populations.

Her research focuses on improving equitable access to screening, follow-up of non-invasive screening tests, and surveillance after cancer treatment.

Her work focuses on practical solutions, including mailing simple home stool tests, providing navigation support, and strengthening health-system processes so patients never miss important follow-up care.

For over a decade, her research has been continuously funded by public and private agencies, and her expertise contributes to screening guidelines and policy discussions across the country. She is also dedicated to training the next generation of physicians and researchers.
