Dr. Ian de Boer, professor (Nephrology) will present the Science in Medicine lecture on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025.
Since its launch in 1976, the Science in Medicine Lecture Series has recognized the School of Medicine faculty research achievements and provided an opportunity for researchers to explore topics outside of their immediate fields.
de Boer is a highly acclaimed researcher recognized worldwide for his expertise in diabetic kidney disease and vitamin D metabolism.
A Pacific Northwest native, he received his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University and completed his residency training at the University of California San Francisco, where he received the Jeffrey Weingarten Award for outstanding third-year medical resident.
In 2003, he joined UW for his Nephrology fellowship training, which included research training in Metabolism, Endocrinology, and Nutrition under the mentorship of Dr. John Brunzell.
He continued as a faculty member in the Division of Nephrology, funded first through Roadmap K12 and ITHS KL2 Career Development Awards and then continuous support from multiple NIH research project grants.
In 2011 he was honored with the Department of Medicine Fialkow Award, promoted to professor in 2017, and inducted into the American Society of Clinical Investigation in 2018.
He was appointed associate director of the Kidney Research Institute in 2016, and has been the director since 2022. He holds the Joseph W. Eschbach Endowed Chair in Kidney Research and is Director of Research for the UW Division of Nephrology. In addition to his high-impact research, he has mentored over 20 trainees, within and outside of Nephrology.
de Boer has been a standing member of two NIH study sections (KNOD, PBKD), serves as Deputy Editor of a leading Nephrology journal (Clinical Journal of American of Nephrology), and is Co-Chair of the international KDIGO Clinical Practice Guideline for Diabetes Management in Chronic Kidney Disease.
