Guang-Shing Cheng co-chaired first International Lung GVHD Consensus Conference
Dr. Guang-Shing Cheng, professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) leads a clinical research program in pulmonary complications of hematopoietic cell transplantation and the Lung Graft-versus-Host Disease Consortium.
With her colleague Dr. Anne Bergeron, she designed and co-chaired the first International Lung GVHD Consensus Conference that took place at the University of Geneva on September 23-25, 2026.
The purpose of this conference was to 1) synthesize our understanding of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome pathogenesis, 2) propose a revision to the 2014 NIH consensus definition, and 3) design an ideal clinical trial for BOS.
The conference convened experts in lung graft-versus-host disease, hematology and transplantation, ILD, immunology, infectious diseases and implementation, as well as patient advocates and industry representatives, to share their work with the public and to establish key scientific and clinical trial collaborations.
Nearly 160 participants were in attendance, with more in attendance online. Several manuscripts are expected, including the updated NIH Consensus definition, which should improve early detection of BOS and other forms of lung chronic GVHD.
A follow-on meeting sponsored by NHLBI is planned for 2027.
