Congratulations to Dr. Anders Chen, associate professor (General Internal Medicine), who received the 2024 Gene Peterson Award for Excellence in Quality Improvement on behalf of the UW Housestaff Quality and Safety Committee.

The Gene Peterson award was named after Dr. Peterson, who had a great appreciation for the involvement of trainees in the fields of quality improvement and patient safety, and for the unique perspective they bring at the University of Washington.

Chen has developed quality improvement and patient safety curricula for the UW Internal Medicine Residency Program and has mentored dozens of residents in quality improvement work at the Seattle VA Hospital and at Harborview Medical Center.

In the words of the housestaff member who nominated him:

“Not only is Dr. Chen intimately involved with the quality improvement and patient safety curriculum for our residents, but he makes it a point to incorporate these values into his own work as seen with his numerous publications in the QI/PS field that champion the importance of exposing trainees to QI/PS work.

I've had the privilege of having Dr. Chen as an attending in primary care clinic and have been so impressed with his ability to sprinkle in learning pearls from both clinical work but also from a quality improvement and patient safety perspective.

We are so lucky to have Dr. Chen at UW!”
