William Bremner stepping down as chair after 20 years

Dr. William Bremner is stepping down as chair of the Department of Medicine, effective July 31, 2018. He became the fifth chair of the department in 1998, after serving as vice-chair since 1987.

A graduate of Harvard University, Bremner received his medical degree and completed his residency and fellowship at the UW School of Medicine before earning a Ph.D. from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

He joined the UW faculty in 1977 as an acting assistant professor of medicine and obstetrics and gynecology. From 1979 to 1987, he served as chief of the Endocrine Section at UW, and from 1987 to 1998 as chief of medicine service at Seattle's VA Medical Center.

A specialist in male reproductive endocrinology, he co-founded and directs the UW's Center for Research in Reproduction and Contraception.

He has received numerous awards, including the University of Washington Medical School Distinguished Alumni Award, election to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians, Western Society of Clinical Investigation Mayo Soley Award, American Society of Andrology Distinguished Andrologist Award and the Robert H. Williams, MD, Distinguished Chair of Medicine Award from the Association of Professors of Medicine.

“I have greatly enjoyed my time as Chair, now in my 20th year,” said Bremner. “In particular I enjoy the wonderful people who make up our department: faculty, fellows, residents and staff. Each of you serves a unique, valuable purpose and does so with a level of dedication and excellence that is inspirational. I am hugely grateful for the interactions that I have had and will continue to have with you.”

Bremner plans to continue as a professor in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition.
