Beverly Berg-Rood is retiring from the University of Washington on July 31, 2023 after over 24 years of service.

Beverly started her career at the University of Washington in 1998 as a financial specialist, and was promoted to manager of program operations in 2000.

Since 2007, she has been the administrator for the Division of Medical Genetics.

Numerous division goals have been achieved during her tenure, including significant growth of the clinical and research programs.

Over the 16 years she has served as administrator for the Division of Medical Genetics, she has been an adept financial, administrative and operational manager.

Beverly is particularly skilled in the areas of financial and research administration, and has expertly managed division budgets and supported the division’s ever-growing grants portfolio during her tenure.

She is well-versed in the complexities of working with university systems, and is able to think creatively about solutions that maximize outcomes within these complexities. She has navigated innumerable complex research administration issues throughout her tenure, and has been an unflappable partner and advocate for division faculty.

“In 2007, Beverly and I set out together with specific goals for the division. All of these have been met or exceeded. She should be enormously proud of her many successes. She has been a true partner throughout. We will miss her leadership and wish her a wonderful and well-earned retirement,” said Dr. Gail Jarvik, professor and head, Division of Medical Genetics.

In addition to working with Medical Genetics faculty on research administration, Beverly has lent her time and expertise to faculty and staff in other divisions within the department, sharing her knowledge and mentoring the next generation of research administrators.

Among her many accomplishments, she was a departmental resource for management of Life Sciences Discovery Funding. Recently, she helped launch the Genetics Counseling Graduate Program, the first degree granting program in the Department of Medicine. The program launched in 2021 and awarded its first degrees in 2023.

In addition to her technical and problem-solving skills, Beverly is known for her incredible generosity. She is willing to go to great lengths to support her community, both inside and outside of work, freely giving her time and expertise to help others around her.

She has given countless hours mentoring colleagues, solving last minute problems, and has always been willing to do whatever it takes to support those around her. She has been a driving force in the culture and community that is medical genetics.

“Beverly has been an outstanding administrator and an incredibly generous, thoughtful colleague. She has made a lasting impact on the Division of Medical Genetics and the Department of Medicine. I will miss working with her but am excited for her as she enters a new chapter in her life,” said Betsy Buswell, vice chair for finance and administration.
