Dr. W. Robb MacLellan, professor and head (Cardiology) has accepted the newly created position of Department of Medicine Executive Vice Chair, effective July 1, 2022. Dr. MacLellan has been the Robert A. Bruce Professor of Medicine and Cardiology Division Head since November 1, 2011. He also serves as director of the UW Medicine Heart Institute.

The Executive Vice Chair will be primarily responsible for clinical strategy, optimizing clinical activity, and delivery of care. In this role, he will lead the department in decision-making on clinical priorities and long-term strategies, establish and foster strong relationships with the hospitals and UW Medicine clinical leadership, and evaluate internal approaches to optimize clinical productivity and finances.

A native of Canada, MacLellan received his medical degree and completed his residency at the University of Toronto before moving to Houston for his cardiology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine.

He came to the University of Washington from UCLA where he was a professor of medicine and physiology, the Maud Cady Guthman Chair in Cardiology, associate chief of the Division of Cardiology, and director of the Cardiovascular Fellowship Program at the David Geffen School of Medicine.

"Robb has been an outstanding leader," said Department Chair Dr. Barbara Jung, "I look forward to partnering with him in this new leadership role."

We will be launching a national search for a new Cardiology Division Head in the Fall, and Robb has graciously agreed to stay on as division head until we fill that position. In addition, he will remain the head of the UW Medicine Heart Institute until a replacement is identified.
