Mary-Claire King receives National Cancer Institute Outstanding Investigator Award

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has established the first Outstanding Investigator Awards, and selected Dr. Mary-Claire King is one of the recipients. Dr. King is a professor of medicine (Medical Genetics) and genome sciences.

The objective of the NCI Outstanding Investigator Award is to provide long-term support to experienced investigators with outstanding records of productivity in cancer research. The OIA is intended to allow investigators the opportunity to take greater risks, be more adventurous in their lines of inquiry, and take the time to develop new techniques. The OIA is a 7-year grant, to provide extended funding stability and encourage investigators to embark on projects of unusual potential in cancer research.

Dr. King will receive $6.4 million over 7 years to study genomic analysis of inherited breast and ovarian cancer. This is a group effort that includes Drs. Tom Walsh, Silvia Casadei, Suleyman Gulsuner, and Ming Lee (Medical Genetics) and Drs. Elizabeth Swisher and Barbara Norquist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
