New program to build up addiction medicine training
Assistant Professor Jared Klein is the program director for a new two-year grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for his education program entitled “Washington InterProfessional Education for Substance Use Disorders (WIPEout-SUDs).” The award, totaling nearly $200,000, will facilitate interprofessional training in the screening, assessment, and treatment of substance use disorders (SUDS) for health professional students at UW.
The program aims to adapt existing interprofessional substance use disorder curricula to the unique needs of UW learners. Specifically, Dr. Klein hopes that students will learn confidence in and an interdisciplinary approach to screening, assessment, and treatment of SUDs; how to use non-stigmatizing approaches when treating SUDs; and how and when to use harm reduction approaches.
Dr. Klein will collaborate with Drs. Tracy Brazg, Joseph Merrill, and Judith Tsui to establish and oversee the program.
