Multi-million dollar grant funds 'Kidney on a chip" research
"Kidney on a Chip" is one of several projects nationwide awarded over $35.5 million in grant funding by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS).
Led by Dr. Jonathan Himmelfarb, professor (Nephrology), the "Kidney on a chip" will allow scientists the opportunity to test how the kidney will respond to new drugs and treatments prior to administering them to patients.
HImmelfarb describes the project to The Daily in the article "‘Kidney on a chip’ research receives multi-million-dollar funding for drug testing":
"New drugs and treatments can potentially be harmful because of individual differences in patients. To customize the best treatment plan, KRI researchers hope to first cure the disease on the microphysiological chip and then translate the successful result to the patient."
The recent grant funding will allow the research team to expand clinical trials for the new technology with the hopes of expediting wide-spread use in the clinical environment.
