Dr. Barbara Jung has accepted the position of associate vice chancellor and dean of the School of Medicine at UC San Diego, effective Jan. 1, 2025.

Jung became the sixth chair of the Department of Medicine on Sept. 1, 2019, and the first female chair in the department’s history.

She received her medical degree with thesis from the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center in San Diego, she completed an internal medicine residency and a gastroenterology fellowship at UC San Diego. Before joining the University of Washington, she was division chief of gastroenterology at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

She has been a transformative leader in her six years as chair, navigating us through the pandemic and launching our strategic plan, among countless other achievements. She recruited an unprecedented number of key leaders to the department (including 6 division heads, 2 associate chairs, and 8 division administrators) and created several new leadership positions.

Under her leadership, the department has grown significantly, focusing on leading innovative research and clinical care, investing in our employees, elevating our teaching mission, and nurturing a supportive and collaborative culture where equity, diversity, and inclusion are at the center.
