Personal life

Jackie grew up in Richland, Washington and is a UW grad who has worked for the university for almost 8 years (plus her time as a student employee while she was in school!)

She likes to travel and if you studied abroad in the UW program in Cádiz, Spain, you may have more in common with her than you think! “I recently found out a colleague and I had been in the same program, just a few years apart! Now I’m wondering how many other Cádiz program “alumni” we have in the DOM,” she said. “Send me an e-mail if that’s you!”

Jackie with her sonsJackie has two young boys (almost 9 and 4) with her partner Bob and enjoys gardening, home improvement, and cooking/baking/meal planning.

“I have a million cookbooks and we try several new recipes each week, either from the addictive Instagram reels or from my cookbooks,” she said. “I’m also teaching my boys to identify and appreciate birds and plants - they’re getting pretty good!”

Work life

Before arriving in the DOM, she had served in administrative and human resources roles in other UW departments. Prior to that, she worked in nonprofits including Food Lifeline and States’ 4-H International, a student exchange agency, and her first professional job was at age 16 working for a DOE contractor that vitrified nuclear waste (“I didn’t do the vitrifying, ha!, but worked in their publications department,” she said).

She has now been in her current role for almost 2 years as DOM Director of Academic HR.

“I support a wonderful team of AHR professionals on the DOM central team who support the divisions in all lifecycle human resource actions related to our faculty, fellows, and other academic personnel – appointments/reappointments, promotions, merit, faculty affairs, leaves, separations, etc.”

A big part of her focus is on faculty affairs – helping find solutions and resolution to faculty complaints, performance or professionalism concerns, and accommodations.

With many new people coming to the DOM year-round, Jackie says the team is focusing on education, continuous learning and capacity building to better support the department’s network of division AHR staff, division heads and administrators.

Collaborating

“I love academic HR because there is never a dull moment and I learn something new almost every day.”

Between collaborating with staff throughout the department and supporting various faculty, fellows, and other academic personnel, Jackie enjoys getting opportunities to interact with a wide swath of the department.

“DOM faculty, staff and fellows are incredibly dedicated, mission-driven and selfless. I get to work daily with highly-accomplished and driven faculty leaders in our system, and it is a real privilege.”

“I also love working with DAs, division AHR staff, and our tight-knit DOM AHR team. It’s an intelligent and fun group that is highly committed to doing a great job.”

Jackie is also a contributor to many projects driven by DOM’s DEI office and is current working to further standardizing our processes for workplace accommodations for faculty who work in clinical settings – a challenge as there are many unique clinical environments in our large department.

“If you’d like to get to know the AHR team better, reach out or drop by my office RR-513. I’m always trying to connect with more people around the department,” Jackie said.
