Ryan Abe new GIM Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Dr. Ryan Abe, clinical instructor (General Internal Medicine) has been appointed the new GIM division's Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). She will lead the development, implementation, and assessment of initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion across the division’s various clinical, research, scholarly, and training programs.
Abe will collaborate with DOM leadership, Stephanie Santos, GIM diversity champion, and other community partners to synthesize DEI best practices and apply them within the division as well as lead the division’s efforts to promote a diversified workforce; equity in healthcare, education, scholarship and research; and an inclusive work environment for all faculty, trainees, and staff.
Dr. Abe (she/her) is a clinical instructor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and works clinically as a hospitalist/nocturnist at UWMC Montlake. She went to medical school at the University of Virginia and subsequently completed her residency and inpatient chief residency at the University of Washington in 2021.
Her passion is health equity and anti-racism education and she developed and directs the Health Equity Pathway in the medicine residency program and co-teaches in the residency’s Health Equity, Advocacy, and Anti-Racism (HEAAR) course. This year, she served as the DEI chair for the Society of General Internal Medicine’s (SGIM’s) NW region. She also loves working and learning with medical students as Cascade college faculty in the School of Medicine.
