Leah Haseley new section head of Nephrology at Harborview Medical Center

Dr. Leah Haseley, clinical professor (Nephrology) will be the next section head of Nephrology at Harborview Medical Center. She has served as the interim section head for the last 7 months, and has effectively navigated the challenges imposed by unprecedented patient volumes and supported faculty and fellows experiencing moral distress from limitations in availability of dialysis care at Harborview.

A New York native, Dr. Haseley received her undergraduate education at Yale University and underwent her medical schooling at Columbia University, where she was admitted to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She did her internship and residency training at the Brigham and Women’s Medical Center in Boston and her Nephrology fellowship at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center.

She came to the University of Washington in 1997 and has been working at Harborview Medical Center since 1998, initially moonlighting as a research fellow. She was appointed as a member of the clinical faculty in 2000, and she moved through the ranks to be clinical professor in 2017.

She is a 'physician’s physician,' an outstanding clinician who is also a passionate advocate for marginalized populations in our community. Year after year, she is recognized by Seattle magazines as a top nephrologist in the Puget Sound area. She was recognized as 'employee of the month' by Harborview in 2019, an extraordinarily rare recognition for a physician.

As importantly, she is a gifted educator. The fellows in the Division of Nephrology have recognized her as the 'Teacher of the Year' nine different times. The residents in Internal Medicine conferred the prestigious Paul Beeson Award on Leah in 2010, a rare recognition for a sub-specialist. She established and ran the mentoring program for fellows for nearly two decades.
